The Pentland Churchill Wardrobe Competition 2022

‘THE PENTLAND CHURCHILL WARDROBE COMPETITION 2022’ brief inspired me to see Winston Churchill from a different perspective, picturing him living in the contemporary era. Even though he used to dress in luxurious garments, he was looking for versatility, functionality and comfortability when he designed the siren suit, characteristics that are still highly requested today for casual outfits. This encouraged me to design a casual siren suit, choosing high-quality comfortable and warm fabrics, such as double-knit jersey and stretchy wool gabardine in subtle and sober colours that would reflect Churchill's political role and military position.

One of his favourite habits was to smoke cigars and by researching various pictures of him in the siren suit I noticed that his pockets were often left open, suggesting that he was using them repeatedly in his day to day life to keep his cigars. This aspect of his clothing inspired me to explore and design different pocket closures that could facilitate the use of them, pushing me to look for innovation, accessibility and practicability. By introducing magnets and interlocking closures I was able to come up with a casual siren suit design that reflects Churchill’s preferences without neglecting to meet current commercial fashion trends.
